What if it Rains? | How to Prepare for a Rainy Senior Session

You’ve been looking forward to your upcoming portrait session for weeks now. You’ve chosen the perfect outfits and location, but now rain is forecasted. Don’t panic! Rain doesn’t have to ruin your photoshoot. In fact, it can add a magical touch to your images. The key is to be prepared. With a little bit of planning, you can still have a successful and beautiful portrait session, even in the rain. Below are a few tips on how to prepare for a rainy senior session, so you can embrace the weather and capture some stunning shots.

How to Prepare for a Rainy Senior Session

If we see rain or any bad weather in the forecast, we monitor it closely!  Our protocol is to wait until the morning of a session to decide if we should postpone and reschedule or move forward with the session. We wait to decide because oftentimes the forecast is wrong and there is no rain! However, if it does end up raining during the session, we have a plan to still get the most out of your session. We’ve shot several times in the rain and always look for awnings to stay covered and dry. There are also things you can bring with you to prepare for a rainy portrait session.

How you can prepare for rain during your senior session

01. An Umbrella

Obviously, an umbrella will help keep you dry in the rain! However, a clear umbrella is best as it can also be used in your photos as a cute prop! Clear umbrellas won’t block your face or your outfit, making it the perfect rainy day accessory.

02. Flip Flops or Slip-on Sandals

We recommend bringing along an extra pair of slip-on sandals for any session, but especially if there is a chance of rain. A pair of flip flops or sandals will save your feet from discomfort, and save your nice shoes from getting wet or muddy in the rain.

03. Makeup

Be prepared in case your makeup needs a touchup! Sometimes in the rain, even if it’s just a light drizzle, your makeup may smear or need a touchup. Always come with your makeup essentials for quick touch-ups in between shots.

04. Hairbrush or Comb

Bring a hairbrush in case your hair needs some attention during your session.  Wind and rain can cause a few hairs to get out of place!

05. A Positive Attitude

While we know rain isn’t ideal, having a positive attitude going into your session will make all the difference! We will do everything to make it an enjoyable experience AND give you the gorgeous senior pictures you were dreaming about!

Also remember, that the majority of the time rain is forecasted, it either doesn’t rain, clears up quickly, or isn’t as bad as originally predicted, which is why we wait to decide until the morning of the session. If the weather is bad enough we will postpone and reschedule, which we know can be disappointing when you’ve been looking forward to your session. Whether we keep your session as scheduled or pick a new date, we will have a wonderful time together and make sure you have an amazing senior portrait experience. In the event we do get caught in a little drizzle, having these items on hand will help everything run smoother and keep you comfortable (and dry) throughout!
